Keeping tradition alive

Originally established as Modern Food Market, Inc. by James and Yoshiko Watamura in 1946 as the largest independent Japanese supermarket located in Los Angeles, CA from 1946-1996.  During that time business thrived and the market moved twice, each time to a larger location.  Finally able to build their own four storey building, having the market on the first floor, business was Great!  As time passed and Yoshiko was ready to retire, the business was passed down to family members who took the supermarket as far as they could until a change had to be made.  In 1997 after the closing of Modern Food Market, a new company was born.  With a fresh start, the couple took their businesses online with japanese groceries and artisan sake.  They continue to bring the tastes of Japan to customers all over the United States.  With their family's 70 years of experience and relationships made, another chapter is born with their latest website, MM Sake.
